How to Read and Understand a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Every motor vehicle produced since model year 1981 carries a standardized 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) structured according to federal regulation 49 CFR Part 565 and international standard ISO 3779. Understanding this sequence allows car buyers, automotive technicians, parts suppliers, and insurance adjusters to identify exact factory configurations, resolve recall notices, and protect against vehicle cloning.
1. WMI (Positions 1–3)
The World Manufacturer Identifier specifies country of origin and automotive manufacturer. For example, 1HG denotes Honda USA, 4T1 denotes Toyota USA, and WAU denotes Audi Germany.
2. VDS (Positions 4–8)
The Vehicle Descriptor Section defines body style, engine displacement, trim line, transmission type, and restraint systems according to manufacturer coding tables.
3. VIS (Positions 10–17)
The Vehicle Identifier Section specifies the model year (digit 10), assembly plant factory code (digit 11), and sequential production serial number (digits 12–17).
Why Position 9 Is the Security Check Digit
The 9th character of every North American VIN is a mathematical security checksum generated by a weighted modulo-11 algorithm. Each letter and number in positions 1 through 17 is multiplied by a regulated position weight and summed together. The remainder when divided by 11 dictates the check digit (0 through 9, or 'X' for remainder 10). If someone attempts to forge a VIN plate or mistypes a single character, the checksum fails immediately. Our online check digit calculator illustrates this full computation step by step.
Model Year 30-Year Rotating Cycle
Model years are represented by a single character at position 10. The system uses numbers 1–9 and letters A–Y (excluding confusing letters I, O, Q, U, and Z). Because there are 30 recognized characters, the cycle resets every 30 years. For instance, the letter 'L' designates 1990 and 2020. Standard North American vehicles resolve this ambiguity using character 7: a numeric digit indicates the 1980–2009 epoch, whereas an alphabetical character indicates 2010 through 2039.
