Automotive & Data Disclaimer
Last updated: October 2026 • Essential reading for car buyers
AutoVinWise provides factory build data and public safety recall notices for informational, educational, and reference purposes only. Factory specifications do NOT reflect physical vehicle condition, undisclosed collision damage, salvage branding, or odometer rollbacks.
1. Non-Affiliation with Government Entities
AutoVinWise is an independent web application and automotive reference platform. We are not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with:
- The United States Department of Transportation (US DOT).
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).
- The United States Coast Guard (USCG).
- Any state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent licensing authority.
All federal specification records, safety recall announcements, and complaint datasets are obtained directly via public government APIs (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov) provided under the Freedom of Information Act and federal public domain access rules.
2. Factory Build Data vs. Physical Vehicle History
Our decoder parses the original factory engineering sequence assigned when the vehicle chassis was stamped on the assembly line. This data reflects how the vehicle was originally configured by the automaker (engine type, transmission, standard safety features, plant location).
Our tools DO NOT record:
- Subsequent structural accidents, frame damage, or airbag deployments.
- Salvage, rebuilt, flood, hail, or junk title branding recorded by insurance companies.
- Odometer mileage alterations or fraud.
- Aftermarket modifications, engine swaps, or retrofitted equipment.
- Outstanding vehicle title liens, unpaid loans, or active police theft reports.
3. Mandatory Pre-Purchase Inspection Guidance
Never purchase any used motor vehicle solely based on an online VIN decode. We strongly urge all consumers and commercial purchasers to:
- Order an Official History Report: Consult the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) or commercial databases (such as Carfax or AutoCheck) to review title history and insurance total loss events.
- Commission a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI): Hire an independent, ASE-certified mechanical technician to inspect the unibody structure, suspension, powertrain, and electronic control modules on a physical lift.
- Verify Physical Stampings: Check that the dashboard VIN plate matches the driver-side B-pillar federal safety sticker, the under-hood firewall metal stamping, and the official title certificate.
4. Safety Recalls & Authorized Repairs
Safety recall notices displayed via our NHTSA lookup are published by vehicle manufacturers under federal mandate (49 U.S.C. Chapter 301). Under federal law, safety recall repairs are performed completely free of charge by authorized franchised dealerships for all eligible vehicles, regardless of warranty status or ownership changes.
5. Zero Financial Transactions & Anti-Scam Notice
AutoVinWise is an entirely 100% free public service. We do not sell vehicle history reports, maintain checkout facilities, or process credit card payments. We will NEVER ask for credit card numbers, PayPal, wire transfers, or fees of any kind.
If a prospective buyer on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, or via SMS demands that you purchase a vehicle report on AutoVinWise or any third-party link, you are encountering a well-documented online vehicle report scam. Legitimate buyers will gladly review reports you already possess or run their own check using the VIN you provide. For details, please consult our Consumer Advisory & Scam Warning.
6. Limitation of Legal Responsibility
While we strive for absolute mathematical precision in check digit verification and API parsing, AutoVinWise assumes no legal liability for inaccuracies, omissions, outdated manufacturer records, or financial losses resulting from automotive transactions.
