How to Decode Electric Vehicle VINs: Battery kWh, Motors & Trim
Learn how modern EV manufacturers (Tesla, Rivian, Hyundai, Ford) encode battery pack capacity, dual motors, and electric powertrains into the VIN.
How the EV Revolution Changed VIN Architecture
As electric vehicles (EVs) replace internal combustion engines, position 4 through 8 (the Vehicle Descriptor Section) has evolved from indicating cylinder count and liters of displacement to encoding kilowatt-hour (kWh) pack sizes, motor configurations, and battery chemistries.
Decoding Tesla VINs
- Character 4 (Model): "S" = Model S, "3" = Model 3, "X" = Model X, "Y" = Model Y, "C" = Cybertruck.
- Character 7 (Restraint / Charger Type): Encodes seatbelt types and onboard charging hardware.
- Character 8 (Motor / Drive Unit):
- "1" = Single Motor Standard
- "2" = Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive
- "4" = Performance Dual Motor
- "E" = Triple Motor Plaid Configuration
Ford Mustang Mach-E & F-150 Lightning
- In modern Ford EVs, character 8 specifies battery pack size:
- Code "K" = Standard Range (SR) Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack
- Code "M" = Extended Range (ER) Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) pack
Verifying Battery Health Beyond the VIN
While a VIN confirms factory pack capacity and motor hardware, it does not reveal current battery state of health (SoH) or degradation. When buying a used EV, always connect an OBD-II diagnostic scanner to read battery cell resistance and maximum charge capacity.
